For the Bible Tells Me So

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Have you ever sat and pondered this question? Does sound only exist when someone can acknowledge it or is does it exist based on the tree's own innate properties separate from any external validation?

This is the sort of philosophical riddle you are asked to embrace when examining the movie "For the Bible Tells Me So."

It asks, "Can the love between two people ever be an abomination?" LOVE...an abomination?? Certainly such is not possible! Well, let us examine what the Bible does in fact tell us.

What is love?
Scripture says that at its most fundamental level, God is love.

"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." I John 4:7-16

There are many truths revealed here, but we will focus on two:

  1. Love is of God - Love comes, originates, and is birthed from God.
  2. God is love - Where God is, love is. Where God is not, love is not. You cannot have one without the other.
Although love can be felt and displayed by people, love is not defined by how we feel. People can do some of the most unkind and inhumane acts out of "love". But Scripture tells us the true barometer for whether love exists is the presence of God.

Is the homosexual act an act of love or an abomination?
In order for the homosexual act to be an act of love, it would have to be birthed from God and be something in which His presence abides.

We know that God created man & woman and that He birthed this relationship when He gave woman to be a help meet for man (Genesis 2:18 ). We also know that God blesses that sexual union and ordains it according to His purposes (Genesis 1:28; Hebrews 13:4). The heterosexual union in the construct of marriage is one created in love/God, by love/God, and abiding with love/God.

In all of the verses where God addresses the homosexual act, He never once blesses, condones, or authorizes these unions under any circumstances. Instead, it is condemned each and every time.

Where there is no God, there is no love. It is therefore an oxymoron to call homosexual unions "acts of love" for to do so implies that these acts have a foundation in God - and based upon the Scriptures they do not. We therefore know that homosexual acts could never be construed to be acts or displays of love.

When describing homosexuality, Scripture has the following to say:

  • It is an abomination - Something that stinks from wickedness; is foul, unclean or detestable to God and is separated from His presence. (Leviticus 18:22; Leviticus 20:13)
  • It is the sign of a reprobate mind - (Romans Chapter 1)
  • The judgement - The fate for those dieing in this sin is the same as any other sin: eternal damnation (I Corinthians 6:9-11).
These references are by no means exhaustive, but it is clear from beginning to end how God feels about this sin.

So, how do the supporters of this documentary get around these truths? One of the participants explains how quite succinctly, "I am going to read the passage very differently...".

The only way to dismiss the Scripture is to claim it does not mean what it says. To assert this, you must engage in mental gymnastics and linguistic nonsense in order to strip the text and even the Bible itself of any meaning or purpose. Even though the Bible states that no Scritpure is of any private interpretation, you must decide to cling to your own interpretation in order to justify the sin and reject the obvious meaning of the text. You must decide to simply "read it differently."

Being a Christian is not about justifying our own viewpoints (Proverbs 14:12, Proverbs 16:25), our own understandings (Proverbs 3:5), or our own feelings (Isaiah 55:9). We are called by His name only when we can be called according to His purpose. If ye love me, keep my commandments. Anything less is a just a feel good, compromising message filled with nothing more than platitudes to condone sin.

Is the Bible about human "perspective" or is it the word of God? You decide.
