Yes, the Ten Commandments are called the Ministration of Death (You can see that link for more on that).

Just keep in mind that those verses are speaking specifically of the two covenants, not to the value of the written Scriptures themselves. The covenant that the Lord had with Israel was through the law. This is why the ark which contains the law is called the "ark of the covenant". Christians however are brought nigh to God in covenant via the the blood of Jesus by being born again (which is of the Spirit).

Yes, we are under the new covenant, and the purpose of the old covenant is to bring us to Christ.

Thanks for posting!Latter Days Ministryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15405696673350225699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793573695603056525.post-68553593638273082172014-10-23T21:16:31.292-04:002014-10-23T21:16:31.292-04:00Hopefully I can explain my understanding a bit mor...Hopefully I can explain my understanding a bit more thoroughly. In verse 7 of the same chapter there is an allusion to the ministration of death, written and engraved in stones. This refers to the ten commandments or law. This is death to those who seek to be justified by the law. Verse 9 refers to these stones as the ministration of condemnation. While referring to the New Testament as the ministration of righteousness. Verse 10 says that the stones of death, the Ten Commandments are done away. And lastly, Paul says that the reading of the OT, without seeing that the OT's essential purpose is to persuade one to The Lord Jesus(acts 28:23). Oh, also Hebrews 1:1 tells us that God , the times past, spoke unto the fathers by the prophets, but in these last days spoken to us by his Son, who is the mediator of the New Testament.

Essentially, I'm saying that our covenant for today, is the NT. The OT is for our learning, yes; but not for practicing. To borrow your understanding, it would be like saying that the Old Testament kills, but the New Testament gives life? Nothing inanimate can give us life; only God can by His Spirit.

Remember that all of Scripture is profitable for doctrine and reproof (II Tim. 3:16). All of Scripture is "letter". The New Testament is spiritual, but so is the Old Testament (Romans 7:14). It is all inspired by the Holy Spirit, and likewise must be appended to the revelation of the Spirit in order for truth to be understood (John 16:13).

It is possible to read the New Testament and still not have spiritual understanding of what is written (I Cor. 3:1; Gal. 3:1-2). Having life from the letter (whether Old or New Testament) is about being under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, not reading one testament over another.

God Bless!Latter Days Ministryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15405696673350225699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793573695603056525.post-61424654945178191852014-10-23T16:50:19.208-04:002014-10-23T16:50:19.208-04:00Hi sis Mia. From my understanding it seems that the "letter" the text is referring to is the OT/TheLaw/the ten commandments. And the spirit refers to the New Testament.Tarres Stanleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04327657354144636736noreply@blogger.com
